Wow can you believe it! We are now into the second month of the NEW Year. Yep, this is the time of the year when millions of people around the world are looking back over the last year to see what they have accomplished. Did everything that you dreamed and hoped for happen as planned in 2016? For some individuals the answer is a thunderous, WOO-HOO!! YES…to which I am rejoicing with you. However, for many others it has been kind of like ‘woe is me’. They set a goal and repeatedly failed due to absence of follow through. Or unfortunately the year came and went with no goals being set at all.
Once people get over the sinking feeling of all that was not accomplished then the mind starts to shift and think about their goals for the New Year. We know most of these goals center around weight loss, investing in going back to school, or the potential for growing one’s business. The problem is that a lot of the ideas never make it from the mind to actually writing out a plan to put feet to what they have been thinking. So it remains as a thought…where these aren’t actually concrete goals…they are just a pie in the sky like wishing upon a star.
So how is this year going to be any different as we continue moving forward? Do you plan to keep on wishing or actually set some concrete goals? It’s really not all that difficult if decide to create smart goals. And there are plenty of resources and tools available to help you. I’m going to give my 5 quick and easy steps to S.M.A.R.T. goal setting that I use. Oh yeah, I’m looking back over 2016 myself.
5 STEPS TO S.M.A.R.T. GOALS:
SPECIFIC – you want to have specific goals for every area of your life; if you haven’t done so yet began to meditate and pray in a quiet place to jot them down. Make sure you know exactly what you want to accomplish: quit smoking, go back to school, or pay off college loans. Whatever it is, it needs to be specific.
MEASURABLE – you need to be able to track your progress to see if what you are doing is effective so you can course correct as you go along. Therefore they need to be written down. What do you want to accomplish in a week, 1 month, or 3 months. Have a day to day goal sheet or a monthly planner to track and tweak as you go along.
ATTAINABLE – these are goals that need to be attainable. They have to be something you can reach. My mindset is, in writing a book, in losing weight, etc. if someone else has reached a level that you are reaching for, than it’s attainable.
REALISTIC – the sky is the limit, so any goal is realistic, but, make sure it’s something you believe you can accomplish. You have to make sure it is a goal of something you BELIEVE that you can achieve.
TIME-LIMITED – make sure that it has a time limited. Have an end date. If you don’t reach it, then recalculate the dates, but, we as human beings work so much better when we have a deadline. Having a checklist gives you a sense of accomplishment as you cross each completed goal off of your list.
As an added bonus is that it is also helpful to have a partner that you can check in with to be accountable. For example if you have a goal to increase your fitness and nutrition then find a weight loss group.
“Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it.”Habakkuk 2:2
Yes, you must now write down the action steps you need to take weekly to make that happen. Just think, before you know it, in 3 months time, you will have reached your goal!
Don’t allow another year to pass you by with the woulda, coulda, shoulda. No way, not this time! Write it down and work your plan now so that great things will happen in 2017!
Blessings and Love,
